Gentle Events

About our performances
The Gentle People like to make our performances exactly that - a performance. We don't sing live and each track is choreographed with props for certain songs. Each track has its own video backdrop for shows, which sets the scene of the song. These are different to the videos which accompany the singles. For instance the live performance of Journey has an ambient backdrop of natural elements such as clouds, water and butterflies and Emotion Heater features lots of travels in space with stars and beautiful coloured lights. We combine these videos with slides, mostly of wonderful features of this universe such as planets and nebulae.

We also have matching stage wear - currently pink and blue glitter numbers. All our clothes are designed by Roja von Galaxy who is fabulous indeed. When we released Journey we all wore matching white plastic outfits, for Emotion Heater, Laurie and I wore purple glitter outfits, and Dougee and Valentine wore two-tone blue space outfits. When we release the next single, they will change again and of course we will let you know when and where we will be performing.

Events Past and Present

May 1996
Release of Emotion Heater EP

The Gentle People had a party to celebrate the release of our single Emotion Heater. At the party, we performed twice during the evening - the fabulous Mr Midnight also performed and the Karminskys entertained everyone in between the sets. Great fun was had by all! We also did a show at the Big Chill around the same time. These shows were filmed and parts of them were edited together with interviews and shown on Shift on Carlton TV.

June 1996
Templehof Airport, Berlin, Germany We went to Berlin and performed at Templehof airport. The Karminskys also flew out and DJed alongside Le Hammond Inferno.

September 1996
Release of Gentle People's Pizzicato 5 remixes on Combinaison Spaciale EP, Triad/Nippon Columbia

November 1996
Release of Take This Trip EP in Japan

December 1996
Album release / Rephlex 5th birthday party
We had a party to celebrate the release of our album. The party was combined with Rephlex's 5th Birthday and was held at the Iceni in London. Our friends DNA, with a little help from Mr Midnight, produced a sparkling winter wonderland set which was cavelike and stunning. We are sorry that some of you could not get in due to overcrowding - we have videoed it and will put snippets up later when digitised.

December 1996/January 1997
Japanese release of Soundtracks for Living album

Mini-tour in Tokyo, Japan

25th Dec
The Gentle People flew into Japan on Christmas day, checked in and went straight to a radio interview with FM-FUJI. This was followed by a delicious dinner with Flavour and then crashing out at the hotel. Happy Birthday Yumi!

26th Dec
The day started with a couple of meetings and an interview with PC Deco - the magazine on top of all the latest computer technology and related happenings in Japan. The Gentle People then went to Club Yellow to prepare the stage set, rehearse and soundcheck. The venue was fab, particulary the white bar upstairs where Dougee also DJed later on. The Gentle performance was excellent fun and the party ultra groovy. Other DJs included Konishi, Mr Tanaka, Yabe, Mikado Koyanagi, Marty Karminsky and Futoshi Kekiguchi. TV Jesus also put on an exciting show. Thanks to all those who came along to Porno - we hope you enjoyed as much as we did!

27th Dec
Up too early for a couple of meetings including an interview with Studio Voice, a fantastic magazine where style meets technogroove. Then onto a wonderful party at the Organic Design shop. Organic Design stocks the best in 20th centuary vintage furniture from around the world - a collectors paradise. The Gentle People did a photoshoot in the shop at 1am which has to be the strangest thing!

28th Dec
Somewhat hungover and absolutely tired to death. Great meeting with Synergy who produce excellent CD-ROMs over a traditional Japanese dinner.

29th Dec
Photoshoot for Switch magazine and the second show at Swinging Stars, Club Asia. Dougee and Laurie also DJed after the show alongside Mr Tanaka and Hasumi amongst many others. A long, long night but lots of fun particularly dancing to Laurie's fab French sounds.

30th Dec
Recovery and dinner with Reiko from Switch plus everyone from Flavour.

31st Dec
Day off!!! We saw the New Year in from the top of the hotel - at the stroke of midnight we raised our champagne glasses as Tokyo Tower was illuminated, fireworks exploded into the sky and the ships in the harbour sounded their horns. A really groovy moment.
